Brody Dalle's lyrics in "Dismantle Me" arrived the same year as her divorce from Rancid's Tim Armstrong, and can be heard as expressing attraction to someone new amidst emotional turmoil. The divorce also led to Armstrong and his friends attempting to tear Dalle down by threatening male members of The Distillers and criticizing her in the press. Biff Dawes engineered the track, leaving no room to coast.
